Liturgical Studies
One-Year Part-Time Courses
26 Friday Evenings & 6 Saturdays per year
They recognized the Lord Jesus in the breaking of bread. Cf: Luke 24:35
This course is inspired by the vision of the Second Vatican Council for the renewal of the Church's liturgy. It aims to develop a sense of judgement informed by a knowledge of the theology and history of the liturgy. The course is recommended for members of parish liturgy teams, choir members, artists, teachers, readers. It would be of benefit to anyone desiring to grow in that active and conscious participation in the liturgy that the Second Vatican Council declared to be the right and duty of every Christian.
The liturgy is an action of God's people who bring a variety of ministries and talents to its celebration. Whatever is done or used in liturgy should be appropriate, dignified, beautiful. Those wishing to contribute the gift of their creativity to the Church assembled for prayer must be imbued with the spirit of the liturgy and trained to exercise their gift to a high standard.
Over the two years a comprehensive introduction to the study of Liturgy is provided. The following is a broad outline of the total course content. Topics may be added or omitted, depending on the availability of visiting lecturers.
Students who take both courses have the option of having their learning assessed for an academic award by essays, projects and an annual examination. The Institute is currently engaged in negotiations for the recognition of this award within the Irish higher education system. Participants may study for personal enrichment without assessment.
