Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction Course
An outreach of the Jesuit Centre of Spirituality, Manresa House, Dublin
This is a two-year course in Spiritual Direction (also called spiritual mentoring or spiritual accompaniment) — understood as the ministry of guiding others in their faith lives. Each year consists of seven weekends, from Friday evening until lunch time on Sunday.
Typical candidates for this course will already have some experience of receiving regular spiritual direction, of making a retreat and of learning about Scripture, theology or spirituality.
The course combines the richness of the Ignatian tradition with contemporary insights into spiritual growth. In Year A, the focus is on deepening one's personal prayer experience, furthering the capacity to reflect, developing communication and listening skills and learning to accompany others. In Year B, the programme addresses in greater depth a number of these central aspects and follows more specifically the dynamic of the Spiritual Exercises with special emphasis on discernment and decision-making.

The Spiritual Direction course at Manresa has been running for over twenty years. This is the first time that it has been delivered West of the Shannon. The beauty of the Newman Institute's premises, a converted warehouse on the banks of the River Moy, will enhance the experience of this course.

Each year of the course consists of seven weekends, beginning at 7.00 p.m. on the Friday evening and ending at 1.00 p.m. on the Sunday.
A condition for acceptance to the course is that the candidate is receiving regular spiritual direction.
Candidates will be required to ask two people who know them well to send a confidential letter of recommendation to the course directors.
After Christmas in Year A and throughout Year B, participants are expected to provide ongoing spiritual accompaniment for at least two people. This is carried on under the supervision of the course directors.
Before completion of the two year programme, participants are expected to make their own arrangements to do an eight day directed retreat.
Entrance to Year B of the course depends on satisfactory participation in year A and on a positive assessment by the course directors of the participant's aptitude for the ministry of Spiritual Direction.
The course will be directed by Fr Laurence Murphy, Sr Angela Higgins and Ms Eileen O'Driscoll of the Jesuit Centre of Spirituality, Manresa.
