Diploma in Applied Theology

Participants are encouraged to engage in their own personal reflection, partake in class discussion and develop ways of linking the  issues discussed with contemporary living.

Entry Requirements

This programme is open to anyone with a strong interest in theology, spirituality and pastoral ministry. Admission is on the basis of completed  application form and interview. Acceptance criteria are: ability to engage with the course material; evidence of potential to achieve the aims of the course; and a capacity to integrate theoretical learning within specific pastoral contexts.

Course Structure

While the course is structured in modules, the delivery of each module and the forms of assessment facilitate  integration of the theological, spiritual and pastoral ministry dimensions  of the course. The Diploma consists of eight modules over a two year period. Lectures will take place on 24 Friday evenings from 7pm to 10pm and on five Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.

 

Year One - Four Modules

Fundamental Theology

A probing investigation of the dilemma of human existence leading to an examination  of the question of God.

Biblical Studies

A basic  introduction to the background and text of the  Old and New Testament.

Christology

An exploration of  the person and work of Jesus.

Spiritual Development

Developing an understanding of the Spiritual   dimension of the human person along with an introduction to the concept of spirituality and to various spiritual traditions.

 

Year Two - Four Modules

Ecclesiology

An exploration of the nature, mission and structure of the Church.

Sacraments & Liturgy

An invitation to think deeper about the sacramental and ritual realities of the life of faith.

Ethics

Introducing the ethical dimension of Christian existence.

Pastoral Ministry

This module will enable participants to take part in, reflect upon and evaluate their learning from a specific pastoral ministry.

 

 

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of coursework, assignments and placement within a chosen pastoral context. The pastoral placement takes place during the second year of the Diploma.
 
Applying the best principles of adult religious education this course would be of interest to:
• Those who seek to know more about the spiritual and religious side of life as interpreted in the Christian tradition.
• Those who want to deepen their knowledge of  the main tenets of Christian faith.
• People already involved in or taking up positions of responsibility or ministry  in local faith communities or parishes.
• Those involved in or who hope to be involved in  the area of religious education or school or hospital chaplaincy.

 

Course Duration

Two Year  Part–Time undergraduate Diploma accredited by the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Aims
Within a holistic vision of the person, this course aims to contribute to the theological and spiritual development of the participants and to equip them with the necessary knowledge, attitudes and understanding for pastoral ministry in a wide variety of contexts (schools, local communities, youth work, voluntary organisations, adult faith formation groups, family ministry, support groups, parish liturgy groups, parish development groups, etc.).
 

Tutorial Help/Spiritual Direction

is available  to all participants as well as access to the Institute’s theological library and facilities.

Course Numbers

A maximum intake of 25 is envisaged so as to facilitate group processes and the placement of participants. The course is also subject to a minimum number of applicants.

Course Fee

€1,200 per year.

It is hoped that progression pathways to degree level will be available  for students who successfully complete this diploma.
